The same as "vegetables". Examples: "I make sure to include a variety of greens in my salads for added nutrition. She always adds a mix of veggies to her stir-fry for extra flavor."

"He kept on at his studies despite the challenges. She kept on at him to fix the leaky faucet."

Expressão usada no sentido de "ficar no pé", "ficar em cima", "pressionar" ou "insistir" a respeito de algo.

"Sarah became the big cheese in the marketing department after a series of successful campaigns."

O primeiro em inglês britânico. O segundo em inglês americano. Usados para identificar uma pessoa importante, influente ou de destaque em uma organização ou área, indicando também que ela é admirada e respeitada, ou arrogante e prepotente.

"She decided to butter up her boss before asking for a day off. He flattered her, highlighting her valuable contributions."

O primeiro é no sentido negativo, para tentar ganhar a simpatia, favores ou obter algo em troca. O segundo é um ato sincero e feito de forma sutil.

"He's always sucking up to the boss to get promotions. Stop brown-nosing the teacher, it won't help you get better grades."

São duas expressões informais, porém a segunda é ainda mais.

"This new smartphone is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He gloats over his wealth and thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread."

Se aplica tanto no lado positivo para se elogiar, quanto no lado negativo no sentido de se ostentar. Exemplos: "A oitava maravilha do mundo". "A última bolacha do pacote".

"I will have the chicken salad, please. I'll have the pasta for the main course. If you're making coffee, I will have a cup. I will have the blue shirt, not the red one."

Usado para pedidos em restaurantes ("vou querer um café"), ou para fazer escolhas ou decisões ("vou ficar com esta roupa").

Frequentemente associado à carne bovina.

Se referindo ao ponto de preparo de uma carne.

"You should chill the wine before serving. The drinks are chilled."

"Let's wait to cool the soup. The weather is cool today. I just took the cookies out of the oven, they need to be cooled before eating."

Se refere ao estado de fresco ou ao ato de esfriar ou reduzir a temperatura de algo, mas não chegando a ser frio extremo.

"After running, it's important to cool down by stretching and walking slowly. We need to cool down the room, it's too warm."

Se refere a diminuir a temperatura de um ambiente quente ou do corpo após um exercício físico.

"Fill the bucket with water. Can you get me an ice bucket?"

Descreve algo que é complicado, difícil de entender ou que requer habilidade.

Usado em situações em que a pessoa pode estar visivelmente agitada, irritada ou nervosa.

"When reading online reviews, it's important to take them all with a grain of salt. She tends to exaggerate, so I always take her stories with a grain of salt. The news report seemed sensationalized, so I took it all with a grain of salt."

Também traduzido como "desconfiar" e "não dar muito crédito". Indica uma postura de desconfiança sobre deteminada afirmação que possa não ser totalmente verídica.

"I have had it with this project. I've had it with this traffic! We've had it with the broken promises. The team has had it, without clear direction, everyone feels lost. This car has had it. It’s time to buy a new one."

Também entendido como "deu o que tinha que dar".

"I overcooked the chicken and it was dry and tough. The steak was overcooked and burnt on the outside. Be careful not to overcook the vegetables, or they will lose their flavor."

Alimento que passou do ponto no cozimento.

"He placed the cushion on the chair. They will cushion the fragile items for shipping."

Como verbo, também pode ser entendido como "acolchoar" e "proteger".

"She will pad the chair to make it more comfortable. He padded the walls to reduce noise. I need to buy padded cycling shorts."

Indica uma superfície acolchoada usada para proteção, suporte ou estofamento. Tem relação funcional e protetora. É usado também como verbo.

"They set off on a trip. She accidentally set off the fire alarm. The acid set off a chemical reaction. The terrorists set off a bomb in the crowded market. The constant noise is starting to set me off."

"Iniciar, partir": em uma viagem, passeio. | "Ativar, disparar, provocar": algo, reação, alarme, bomba, explosão. | "Irritar": alguém.

"It's important to keep up with the latest trends in your industry. The company is working hard to keep up with its competitors. I can't keep up with you, you're walking too fast. Keep up the good work."

"Manter-se": informado, a par, atualizado. | "Manter": padrão ou nível alto, preços, status etc. | "Acompanhar": ritmo. | "Permanecer, continuar": algo que está em andamento.
