Jerome David Salinger was born on January 1st. 1919 in New York City. On july 16th. 1951 The Catcher in the Rye Salinger’s first and only novel was published. Also he published many short stories throughout his career.
Salinger avoided the public eye and became famous as a recluse. He cared about how his novel fared among young readers. Salinger married and divorced several times during his long life and he died in New Hemshire on January 27, two thousand and ten.
What is The Catcher in the Rye about? It is a story of a 17-year-old boy, Holden Caulfield who tells how he has been expelled from Pencey Prep School for failing most of his classes.
The boy doesn’t want to admit to his parents that he was expelled from another school, so he goes to New York where he spands several days and experiences many adventures.
The Catcher in the Rye plot, is focused on Holden’s consideration of the world of adults as phonies and how he is unsure of the truth and feels down by everyone which is why the book is so unique.
Now I would like to focus on the main character of the novel because across the decades many critics have praised this book for its brilliant portrayal of the angsty teenager through the character of Holden Caulfield.
Here we have a young men, who doesn’t care about his future also he is very judgmental and looks for the worst qualities in anybody that he encounters.
To be honest I don’t like Holden's personality and I disliked a lot of his behavior, but I must admit that I really enjoy reading him because he is also a very interesting character.
However I don't think we should forgive Holden for being awful to almost everyone, but he is also very lonely, full of negative emotions and in some way he is a victim.
