O primeiro é usado no aspecto negativo. O segundo no aspecto positivo.

"The train was bursting at the seams. She was bursting at the seams with joy. My suitcase was bursting at the seams with clothes. The restaurant was bursting at the seams with customers."

]Transmite a ideia de estar tão cheio que parece que vai transbordar. Se aplica a objetos, lugares e emoções.

Prisão de ventre.

Tem uma conotação negativa. Implica num inchaço que está fora do normal ou prejudicial. Mais utilizado na saúde.

"I started out as a teacher before becoming a writer. They started out on their journey at dawn. He started out with a small business that later grew into a large company."

Se refere a dar início a algo específico. Enfatiza o ponto de partida ou início.

Expressão empregada para descrever alguém que é considerado um fracasso completo.

Quando duas pessoas se encontram sem haver se conhecido antes, como em namoros virtuais.

"He decided to embrace a new lifestyle. The company embraced innovation."

Não se aplica muito ao abraço físico. É mais usado no sentido de acatar, acolher ou aceitar uma ideia ou crença.

"I was surprised when she showed up at my door. He didn't show up for the meeting. His lack of preparation showed him up in front of everyone. When under pressure, his true character showed up."

Se aplica apenas a pessoas e não a coisas abstratas como fraquezas, medo, emoções etc.: "Aparecer": inclusive de forma inesperada. | "Comparecer": em algum evento ou compromisso. | "Expor": alguém. | "Se mostrar": no sentido de revelar-se.

"I agree with this proposal, but with a caveat."

Uso formal.

"Overall, I'm happy with the results. The overall performance was impressive. Overall costs have increased this year."

Também pode ser traduzido como "no geral" e "total".

Synonym: "wasted" or "to get wasted". Examples: "After the party, he was completely two sheets to the wind. She got wasted at the club last night."

"I was at a loss when my car broke down. We were at a loss trying to fix the computer. They were completely at a loss during the emergency."

Equivalente a estar perplexo em uma situação e não saber o que fazer.

"She was at a loss for words after hearing the news."

O mesmo que ficar sem saber o que dizer.

"As it turned out, the movie was really good."

Enfatiza o resultado final, geralmente inesperado.

"Needless to say, she was very happy with the news. The exam was really difficult. Needless to say, many students failed."

Denota que algo ou alguém é muito melhor do que a concorrência.

"She needed a quick pep talk before the big interview. The manager gave the team a pep talk. I really needed that pep talk today."

"The topic came up during the meeting. I didn't expect that issue to come up. An interesting opportunity came up for him. Your name came up during our conversation."

Sempre de forma inesperada.

"We all cracked up when he told that funny story. She always cracks me up with her stories."

Também no sentido de fazer alguém cair na risada.

"Coffee tastes better when you grind the beans fresh. He grinds his teeth when he is stressed. It’s a tough grind, but it pays off. He’s been on the grind for months."

"Moer ou triturar": algo em pó. | "Ranger": os dentes. | "Ralar": trabalhar duro. Como substantivo, também indica "moagem" e "rotina pesada".

"Skipping regular maintenance on your car is a recipe for disaster."

Indica que determinada situação provavelmente resultará em um resultado muito negativo ou problemático.

"Meet + over + (lunch/coffee/dinner)". Example: "Let’s meet over lunch to discuss the project."

Também pode ser traduzido como "marcar um almoço ou café para" tratar sobre algo. Mais comum em contextos profissionais. Enfatiza uma atividade que será feita durante o encontro (como café, almoço, jantar etc).

"Meet up (+ with someone)". Example: “We should meet up this weekend.”

Também pode ser traduzido como "combinar de se encontrar". Enfatiza o ato de combinar ou de se encontrar. Usado de maneira informal e com a intenção de passar um tempo juntos. Não tem conotação profissional.

"We need to kick-start our marketing campaign next week."

É um verbo usado no mesmo sentido de "colocar pra rodar", enfatizando o início de uma ação ou processo.

"In short", "simply put" = used in informal contexts and conversations. | "To sum up" = used in spoken summaries and informal writing. | "In conclusion", "in summary" = typical of formal writing.

O primeiro em inglês americano. O segundo em inglês britânico. Pode indicar também "tempo de espera", quando se aguarda conexões, ou "atraso" para aviões.

Quando se refere a transporte em avião, ônibus, carro etc.

"She had to stand in line for two hours. We waited in a queue for concert tickets."

O primeiro em inglês americano. O segundo em inglês britânico.

"She is a wise person. Job-wise, things are going well. Price‑wise, it’s out of our budget. Battery‑wise, it lasts all day. Turn the knob clockwise. Slice the cake lengthwise."

Como sufixo, é traduzido "no quesito a" ou "no que tange a" ("no que tange ao emprego, as coisas vão bem"). Também pode indicar a direção, a forma ou modo de algo (no sentido horário, no sentido do comprimento, na direção da borda").

"They offered me a bribe. He tried to bribe the judge."

Como substantivo, também significa "propina".

"I can’t get this lid off the jar. I will get off the bus at the next stop. Get off my property! She gets off work at 5 PM. He was lucky to get off with a small fine. Can you get off the computer now? We need to get off early tomorrow."

"Tirar": algo de algum lugar. | "Descer": desembarcar de um transporte. | "Sair": de um lugar, de férias ou do trabalho no final do expediente. | "Se livrar": de algo ruim. | "Parar": de usar algo, computador, remédio. | "Partir": sair de viagem.

"He had a snack before dinner. I like to snack on fruits in the afternoon."

Como verbo, seria "fazer um lanche" ou "comer de lanche".

No sentido de "inumerável".

"When it comes to cooking, she's the best. When it comes to money, be careful. He's strict when it comes to rules."

Também pode ser entendido como "no que diz respeito a" ou "no que tange a".

Synonym: "Once again". Examples: "She forgot her keys yet again. He called me yet again at midnight. The experiment failed yet again."

O mesmo que "de novo".

Pode ser entendido como “ser direto e objetivo” ou "francamente", dando ênfase na sinceridade. Em alguns contextos, pode ser usado como "de fato".

"Please specify your gender. In Portuguese, nouns have grammatical gender."

Também para indicar o "sexo" de uma pessoa.

No literal, é entendido como "tamanho único" que serve para todos, mas pode ser usado de maneira figurada quando algo é padronizado ou genérico.

Também entendido como "ter coragem".

Se trata de sobremesas prontas.

"Prender" no sentido de fisgar o interesse de alguém. Também pode ser traduzido como "gancho", "fisgar" e "viciar".

Também entendido como "anúncio" ou "publicidade".

"Acontecer": algo que está ocorrendo. | "Continuar": uma ação. | "Prosseguir": seguir adiante com algo ou passar para uma próxima ação. | "Entrar": no sentido de embarcar.

"I crave chocolate every night. After the long trip, he craved a hot shower."

"Estar com muita vontade de algo", principalmente quando se refere a comida ou vícios.

"Don’t beat yourself up over one mistake. He got beaten up after the bar fight. The critics beat up the new movie. This old car is really beaten up."

"Se culpar": se martirizar ou se cobrar demais. | "Espancar": agredir. | "Detonar": criticar, principalmente em noticiários. | "Surrado": algo que está em mau estado pelo uso intenso, como um tênis "batido".

No sentido de uma pessoa comunicativa.

"She has a strong character and never gives up. What character are you using in your text? The main character of the novel is a detective."

Também pode indicar "caractere" tipográfico, "personalidade" e "personagem", no caso de personagens fictícios.

"The ship's crew worked through the night. The film crew arrived early to set up the cameras."

Também pode indicar "equipe técnica". Usado em contextos de navegação, aviação e produção cinematográfica.

No sentido de reduzir gradativamente o uso de alguma coisa até parar completamente, como medicamentos, vícios, hábitos, tecnologia, dependência emocional ou financeira. Significa também “desmamar”.

Sem o compromisso de parar totalmente. "Diminuir": orçamento, consumo etc. | "Reduzir": produção, burocracia, atividades etc. Usado também em marketing e mídias digitais, no sentido de reduzir gastos, frequência de campanhas, postagens, programas.

"My sleep schedule is totally out of whack. The system is out of whack again. Her hormones are out of whack lately."

Quando algo não está funcionando direito ou está bagunçado.

"That cold drink really hit the spot! A nap would hit the spot right now. This soup hits the spot on a cold day."

Geralmente usado em contexto de comida, bebida, conforto ou desejo. Também pode ser entendido como "ser exatamente o que precisava" ou "vir na hora certa".
